Finance for Non-Financial Managers

Participants receive an A4 ring-binder comprising three sections:

The ‘Workbook’ is where they make notes as the course progresses and complete exercises, usually working in pairs.

The ‘Reference’ section covers the same ground (and more) but in a very concise way, allowing participants to return to topics of particular interest in the future.

The ‘Game’ section is where they find information about the village of Little Chadwick – its geography, its history, its demographics. This is also where all the accounts and ratios for their pub are filed as they are distributed. Unlike the shorter versions, the two day programme does see the reports being printed out (on different coloured paper for each season), since the teams are expected to work more closely with the information, analysing movements in key ratios and preparing detailed budgets for their businesses.

Financial & Commercial Awareness

Each participant receives an A4 spiral-bound booklet. The front section provides information on the village and its pubs – but then goes on to provide a little background information for each of the decisions the team needs to make (this kind of information is conveyed verbally on the two day programme).

The back section provides brief information on how to read the accounts and the various marketing reports and explains what each of the key ratios means. The inside back cover of the booklet provides a grid where participants can keep a note of what decisions they took in each round.

In fact, all the material in the booklet (including the grid of decisions taken) is also available within the simulation by clicking on appropriate links – but we find it is preferable if everyone has their own copy and their own brief reference source for the future.

Commercial Awareness & Team Building

Again, each participant receives an A4 spiral-bound booklet. This version is somewhat shorter, reflecting the slightly narrower scope of the format.

Generally, we like to emphasise the fun competition element of the simulation. Where possible, tables are covered in the pubs’ colours and are adorned by the relevant pub-sign. A page in the booklet is made available where teams can write down which of their colleagues in the room (or otherwise) are running which of the pubs.
